A book beneath any other cover...
Readers are often surprised to discover that the author of a book rarely has anything to do with its cover design.
But it's true—in most cases, the publisher decides what the cover should look like. Generally, the book's editor confers with the publishing house's art director, and together they choose an artist, graphic designer, and/or photographer to create the cover illustration. (Yet another designer might create the lettering of the title and the design's composition.) Often, the person who creates the cover doesn't actually read the book, but works from notes and ideas given to him or her by the editor and art director. An artist might create an image from scratch, or a designer might comb through available art looking for a image that suits the book. Meanwhile, the author does a lot of praying and sometimes tries to interfere, with mixed results.
Cover designs tend to be different for different editions of a book.
